TVET research as a central factor for the development of TVET systems

TVET research is related to the objectives and elements of socially contextualized and highly functional TVET systems. Vocational education and training systems cover different economic sectors with a wide range of occupational profiles of TVET and further trainings. The elements of a vocational education and training system include different learning venues, occupational curricula and didactic approaches, examination forms, laws and training regulations, in-company and vocational school TVET personnel, and the development and use of analogue and digital learning materials. Moreover, TVET systems are increasingly embedded in international contexts in terms of structural developments.

TVET research is an essential factor in the development of TVET systems. Those results provide information and advice on TVET policy depending on the needs, focusses and research areas. In addition, TVET research contributes to innovation and the transfer of knowledge in cooperation with TVET practitioners. TVET research always has to take the changes in work and the analysis and design of vocational education and training as well as qualification and learning processes into consideration. Thus, TVET research aims to contribute to the further development of the vocational education and training system.

Despite the relevance of TVET for social and economic development worldwide, the international TVET research community is at the beginning and still has much potential for development. International TVET research also presents itself to be an interdisciplinary approach and addresses a wide range of issues and development tasks at various levels.

Issue 15 of TVET@Asia invites readers to discuss and reflect on the system-related establishment of the prerequisites as well as various approaches to TVET research as a central condition for the development of international TVET systems. We invite scholars, scientists, curriculum developers, practitioners and teachers from the TVET community to contribute to the upcoming issue15 of TVET@Asia, and to address the issues and challenges as described above, possibly referring to one or more of the following aspects:

  1. International TVET research as an approach to developing reform recommendations for TVET systems
  2. Establishment of international TVET research as a scientific discipline
  3. Research approaches and methods of international TVET research
  4. Conducting learning processes in the context of work processes by action research
  5. Approaches of comparative TVET research
  6. Methods and evaluation approaches for research on Work-based Learning (WBL) in different learning venues
  7. Didactical concepts for the promotion of work process related learning
  8. Requirements for teachers for quality assurance in vocational education and training
  9. Transfer and operationalization of TVET objectives
